Dr. Meron Tesfaye

Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Meronrecently graduated with her PhD in Chemical Engineering from theUniversity of California, Berkeley. She is passionate about environmental sustainability and energy issues and completed her doctoral dissertation focusing on low carbon dioxide emission and highly efficient energy conversion devices called fuel cells. Her dissertation work involved investigating, understanding and optimizing gas and water transport phenomena through nanometer thin ion conducting polymer films at electrode interfaces of hydrogen fuel cells for electric vehicle application. During her PhD, Meron has also had exposure to the frontiers of battery research for transportation, large scale grid storage and consumer devices.

Meroncompleted her undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineeringwitha minor in Engineering Leadership Development inMay of 2013fromUniversity of Maryland, College Park. As an undergraduate, Meronworked as an undergraduate researcher at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory with Energy Research in Biofuels and Biorefining investigating fuel production of algae. She has also participated in Energy Research with International Reachat Washington University in St. Louis where she learned about energy research and policies in China and investigated coatings for electronic and solar panel applications. She has also interned at Eastman Chemical Company working on optimizing processes for development of plastics and polymers.

Meronbelieves that energy access and energy wealth should not be a privilege enjoyed just by those in Minority World countries.
